About the demo

About a year ago my local club, Tri-Cities Woodturners, had a donation project making a functional birdhouse.  I made a large birdhouse shaped like an acorn.  After completing the project, I had leftover materials and decided to make a smaller version of the birdhouse.  My wife then suggested that I turn a wood bird to go with birdhouse.  That simple project has evolved into a strong interest in turning ornamental birdhouses and birds.

Most of my ornamental birdhouses are larger than Christmas ornaments and are intended for year-around decoration.  I also turn a wood stand to use for displaying the hanging acorn-shaped birdhouses.  The stand is a large version of a stand that I make for displaying Christmas ornaments.

The first part of my demonstration will focus on making the stand for the birdhouse and will include a discussion of how the stand can be scaled down to make an elegant stand for displaying Christmas ornaments.

Next, I will demonstrate how I make the ornamental birdhouses.  This process is similar to that used for making birdhouse Christmas ornaments, but on a larger scale.

Finally, time permitting I will discuss the process that I use for turning birds on the lathe.

About Delbert

Delbert’s woodworking journey began in a middle school shop class over 50 years ago.  Although he did some wood turning early on, for many years most of his focus was practical, making furniture and completing home improvement projects.  In 2016, his focus became more creative.  He began honing his wood turning skills.  Then, his art gradually evolved from mostly making wood bowls to creating a diverse array of more unique items.

Delbert is a member of the Carolina Mountain Woodturners and the Tri-Cities Woodturners clubs.  He is a member and on the Board of Directors of the Holston Mountain Artisans in Abingdon, Virginia, where his work is on display.  Additionally, he has work displayed at the Johnson County Center for the Arts and he participates in regional art and craft shows.
