About the Class

Class Overview:
In this class we will mostly be using a skew and spindle turning gouge to turn a number of small projects using both green and dry wood. The intent of this class is to learn and practice the principal skew and spindle gouge cuts on some easy-to-turn green wood blanks, starting with Christmas trees and mushrooms. Depending on the inclinations and skills of the class, we may move on to turning tops and/or candlesticks out of dry hardwood or we may just stick with generating lots of wood shavings.

The overall objective of the class is for everyone attending to become reasonably comfortable using a skew and spindle gouge.

Skill Level:
This class is most appropriate for intermediate turners, although beginners with a good understanding of safety, lathe operation, and basic lathe tool use should also be reasonably comfortable in the class.

Tools:
Turning Center tools will be available for use during the class, but participants are encouraged to bring their own tools.

Tools used:

- Skew
- Spindle detail gouge
- Spindle roughing gouge
- Parting tool
- Maybe a bowl gouge
- Maybe a scraper

Materials: Both green and kiln dried blanks will be used in this class. Materials will be provided by the instructor or CMW, the cost of which is included in the class fee.

Artist Background
While I started turning in high school shop class, I didn't get my own lathe until '84, and have been generating wood chips since then. I am a self taught turner, but credit much of my technical knowledge, technique, and approach to reading Richard Raffan Books and attending demonstrations. I joined AAW a long time ago, and joined CMW when I moved to this area in 2018.
