February
2009:
In January, we had
Rodger Jacobs demonstrate for us.
Rodger's demo was great; I came away with a new sense of
personal inspiration for my turnings. Our demonstrator this
month will be Mark St. Leger from Virginia. Mark
previously demonstrated for us in November 2003. You can
learn more about Mark by linking to his website from our
homepage.
In January, I was given a
very nice thank you letter and packet from CarePartners
for the contributions of CMW members to their Festival
of Trees project in 2008. This is great project that
benefits so many - my thanks again to all those who
donated, volunteered, and helped with this.
Also in January, we also held a
Board of Directors meeting. Many items were
discussed at our meeting. Here are some of the
highlights. Despite the unrest in our economy, CMW is in
sound shape. We have carefully planned our budget for
2009, allowing for 11 more excellent woodturning
demonstrations, some upgrades and additions to CMW's
assets, and increased CMW's contribution to TLC
class tuition fees. The TLC should have some upgraded
lights soon, the trailers have been moved to a better
location, and are secured better than ever. Warren
Carpenter has agreed to serve another term as one of
our three Endowment Trustees. A historical document
about CMW has been reviewed and is now posted to our web
site. We have also agreed on suggested mentoring guidelines,
also available online. We've added a Classifieds section
to our newsletter.
We will also re-start our
Club Challenges this year, starting in March. Anyone who
brings an item for the challenge and talks about it
during the Instant Gallery will be eligible to receive
free money. Actually, a gift certificate from one
of our supplier/supporters. Speaking of supporters...did
you know that as a CMW member you are eligible for a
discount at Klingspor in Hickory? Be sure to inquire
about it when purchasing non-powered tools.
Many of those on our board
- including me - feel that one of CMW's best benefits is
our social network. Meeting new members, making new
friends, and discussing
tools, woods, shops, etc. is always interesting and is a
big draw for me at each meeting. Last October, Gary
Bills led our first Party in the Park to serve that
same purpose - spending time with like-minded folks for
an entire afternoon. We already have space reserved for this
event to be held again this year, but need your help
planning/organizing. If you can help out, please contact
Gary Bills immediately.
Do you ever have a
woodturning question that could be answered by another
one of our members? Need an answer quickly? Does your
question have an answer that others could benefit from?
If so, you should join our message board. You can do so
FREE from the home page of our website. Have questions
or problems? If so, please contact us for a hand.
If you have not yet renewed
your membership in CMW for 2009, please do so soon.
You can renew by filling out the renewal form (on our
web site) and mailing it to the address shown at the
top.
Membership dues are only $25 single or $35 per
family. Please look at the value of
your membership and consider joining as a Supporter ($100),
Sponsor ($500), or a Patron ($1000) this year. Your contributions
help us continue bringing the best demonstrators
in the world. Special thanks to the following Patrons,
Sponsors, and Supporters for 2009: John Hill, Bob &
Melissa Gunther, Anthony Napoli, Leon Galloway, Ed Anderson, Gary Beck, Ted Connors, Bill Crum,
Pete D'Angona, Tucker Garrison, Jack Hastings, Ray Jones, Robert Kellar, Carlos
Kennedy,
Jim Kilton, Fred Lindsay,
Arthur Mendelow,
Doug Nesbitt, Bill Pate, Aubrey Rogers,
Marti Royo, Bill Rucker, Jack Rule, Glenn Winston,
Bud Zalesky, Richard Short, Gary Bills, Michael Justice, and Dick Miller. I look forward to seeing
you soon. As always, if you have any questions, please
contact any member of our board for assistance.
