May
2008
Our May meeting was very
well attended.
Binh Pho's demonstration kept
many of our members at the meeting for the full day.
Binh showed us woodturning, high speed carving, and
airbrushing, and is clearly an expert in each technique.
A video of his demonstration should be
available for rental from the library by lunch time.
Our demonstrator in June
(on the 14th) will be David Ellsworth. David is
from Pennsylvania, and is one of the most renowned
woodturners in the world. David's turnings are much
sought after by collectors and galleries. His
demonstration should be very good - I look forward to
seeing you at our meeting.
All that CMW has been and
is today is because of its members. Many of our members
are part of the Above & Beyond group - an updated
list of these generous folks is on our web site at:
www.carolinamountainwoodturners.org/members/above.htm
. (An updated list is also displayed when our meetings
begin each month.) Be sure to thank them for their
generosity.
Would you like to
volunteer to help out CMW? If so, we can use your
help. We currently need assistance at the library table
for filing and labeling, and need help with writers for
our newsletter. Please contact a board member if you can
help out.
Are you a member of the
AAW? Did you know that AAW members are protected
under a liability policy
when turning at CMW sanctioned events? Membership also
gets you 4 of the quarterly issues of American Woodturner - an excellent and
inspiring woodturning journal. This year’s
Symposium will be held THIS MONTH in Richmond, Virginia.
For more information on the Symposium, go to
www.woodturner.org/sym/sym2008
.
Being an AAW member also gets you a discount on the price of the admission to
the symposium.
Even though it is only
June, please start thinking about some of our
upcoming fall activities:
-
In September, we will have our
annual auction.
-
In early October, we'll have our first
CMW picnic.
-
In November,
we will decorate the Hospice tree again. We need
about 200 ornaments if we are to match the count
from previous years. This is a great use of spare time,
as it builds your skills and is rewarding too.
The CMW library
continues to grow. Allen Koenig is keeping the
database and library's assets up to date. Many new videos
and books were added last month! Be sure to take
advantage of this valuable member resource.
Please contact me if you ever have questions or
comments.
Hoping this letter finds you knee deep in shavings,
Mike
